MEDIA RELEASE CNIA expresses grave concern regarding the Canadian RN entry-to-practice exam contract being awarded to an American online exam corpor

MEDIA RELEASE

CNIA expresses grave concern regarding the Canadian RN entry to practice exam contract being awarded to an American online exam corporation.

Tuesday February 21th, 2012 – The Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) is concerned about the decision of the Canadian Council of Registered Nurse Regulators (CCRNR) to engage in negotiations with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), an American corporation, to procure and maintain the Canadian RN entry‐to‐practice exam.

As a group of Canadian nursing informatics experts, CNIA welcomes the transition to online examination opportunities for our new nursing graduates and support the value of leveraging a variety of technologies, including computer adaptive technology, to enable timely and efficient testing methods and processes, improved documentation of processes, provision of evaluation metrics, and leveraging information management opportunities. However, the decision of the CCRNR to engage an American company to develop, implement, and maintain the entry to practice exam raises serious concerns around the implications of technology-related issues such as privacy, data protection, and most importantly, maintaining the integrity of the competency-based content for Canadian baccalaureate prepared nurses in a Canadian health care environment.

CNIA shares the concerns of other special interest nursing groups across Canada in questioning the process by which the decision was made. There was no consultation with the CNIA regarding best practices for online testing or experiences, or for recommendations regarding Canadian expertise in this area. Additionally, there was a significant lack of consultation across Canada with key stakeholder groups, including educators, administrators, researchers, nurses, nursing students, or Canadian employers.

The CNIA joins other Canadian Nursing bodies in requesting that the CCRNR place the negotiations with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing on hold until such time that the appropriate consultation among the nursing profession in Canada can be undertaken to provide input and direction on this decision. Additionally, CNIA calls for a collaborative process involving the CCRNR and the Canadian Nurses Association and other Canadian stakeholder groups in an open and transparent manner to resolve this issue and move forward for the benefit of all Canadian nurses.

The Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) is a national non-profit special interest organization that is the voice for Nursing Informatics in Canada. CNIA exists to help nurses across practice settings in Canada to learn, share, research, and create informatics-related projects and experiences that support NI competencies, theory, and practice of informatics on a national level. CNIA is Associate Group of the Canadian Nurses Association, and has a formal affiliation to COACH and the IMIA-SIGNI.
Participants will benefit from the extensive practical, academic, and research knowledge and experience of the faculty who will teach in the institute. The curriculum will cover a broad range of topics with content being covered through a combination of didactic presentations, small and large group discussions, and independent study.

Topics to be covered will include:

History and evolution of informatics in nursing

Structure and function of clinical information systems

Nursing data standards

Human factors considerations

Organizational transformation
