Educating Tomorrow's Nurses: Where's Nursing Informatics?
SYNOPSIS: Funded by Health Canada Office of Health and the Information Highway, the study will describe the current state of: 1) informatics education opportunities currently available to undergraduate nursing students, 2) the level of preparedness of nursing faculty to provide necessary education opportunities in nursing informatics for undergraduate nursing students, 3) information and communication technology infrastructure and support for providing the education opportunities, and 4) opportunities to enhance nursing curricula, faculty preparedness, and ICT infrastructure and support in Canadian schools of nursing.
This study builds on an earlier National Nursing Informatics Project. It is influenced as well by the work of the Canadian Nurses Association national Health Information: Nursing Components (HI:NC) work and Health Canada's Office of Health and the Information Highway (OHIH) in conjunction with the Canadian Nurses Association and University of Victoria (see Appendix A for further details). It has the support of an Advisory Committee with representatives of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, Canadian Nurses Association, Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses and Health Canada Office of Nursing Policy.

The final response rates, based on a population of 77 Schools of Nursing with undergraduate programs, were as follows:
- Infrastructure: - n = 37 - 48%
- Curriculum - n = 39 - 51%
- Faculty - n = 130 faculty responded representing 29 known schools of nursing - which is at least a 38% response rate. However, approximately 15% (n=21) responses did not indicate their school of nursing. Seven schools had ³ five faculty responses. Faculty responses ranged from 0 - 17 per school.
- All three questionnaires - 26 schools of nursing had responses to all three questionnaires = 34%
