MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE CNIA
CNIA expresses grave concern regarding the Canadian RN entry-to-practice exam contract being awarded to an American online exam corporation.
Tuesday February 21th, 2012 – The Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) is concerned about the decision of the Canadian Council of Registered Nurse Regulators (CCRNR) to engage in negotiations with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), an American corporation, to procure and maintain the Canadian RN entry-to-practice exam.
CNA declares made- and owned-in-Canada RN entry exam essential!
It was recently announced that 10 of Canada’s RN regulators selected the American-based National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to develop a new entry exam. This means that as early as 2015 the current Canadian exam, the CRNE, will no longer exist. Read about the history and background of the CRNE.
CNA president Judith Shamian issued a declaration of principles for the development of an RN entry exam. Watch Shamian at a news conference and read the media release and the Q-and-A’s.
Two ways to show your support for a Canadian-based RN exam
Sign CNA’s online petition. Demand that the 10 RN regulators stop negotiating with a U.S.-based organization to develop an RN entry exam.
Write your health minister.
Tell the government that a new RN exam must not have a negative impact on care delivery or on the health of the population. You can write as a registered nurse, student or as a member of the public.Current CNA Updates

The Next Decade:
CNA’s Vision for Nursing and Health
Nurses are the largest group of health-care providers in Canada and around the world and, as such, are uniquely placed to address health priorities. While the Canadian health system is evolving to address this country’s health priorities, it is doing so in a global context. This presents a number of challenges stemming from national and international pressures, including increasingly complex health demands and a shortage of health-care professionals. If we continue to work with current policies and delivery models, the gap between health-care needs and our ability to address them will grow.
Working collaboratively with partners to develop far-sighted policies and well-targeted actions, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is helping build a high-quality and sustainable Canadian health system. This vision focuses on keeping people well by linking health to social determinants, supporting health promotion and promoting community-based care as well as acute illness care. Nurses are at the forefront of mapping the future of health care, strongly believing in health as a human right. READ MORE....CNA launched its first National Expert Commission in May 2011 to contribute to the transformation of health care in Canada. The Commission will consult with Canadians across the country and develop recommendations to help shape the health-care system into one that is better equipped to meet the changing needs of Canadians.
With the looming expiry of the health accord in 2014, the future of Canadians’ health care is at a critical juncture. Our current health system has a sound foundation that provides well for many people — but not for all Canadians, or in all ways. It is no secret that the system needs vast improvement to meet the growing and changing health needs of Canadians.

Bringing the Code of Ethics to Life
The Canadian Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses is a statement of the ethical values of nurses and of nurses’ commitments to persons with health-care needs and persons receiving care. It is intended for nurses in all contexts and domains of nursing practice and at all levels of decision-making.
CNA’s Learning Modules: Bringing the Code of Ethics to Life provide a convenient way to become familiar with the values and responsibilities at the heart of ethical nursing practice and to see how they are applied in everyday working scenarios. ACCESS THE ETHICS MODULES
